My art focuses on the stories and characters I create. These stories are based on dramatized versions of my own personal experiences as well as stories I have heard over the course of my life. The stories are my way of processing events in life, no matter how ridiculous, inconsequential, or emotional they may be, and turning them into stories.
To put it another way, I use these stories for entertainment- I enjoy creating silly/engaging moments with characters I made while subconsciously adding these events into my stories and characters- only realizing how much of myself has been added to them upon reflection days to even years later.
“How do you make these stories???” Well, I daydream— a lot. I start by creating a character or story concept, something that interests me enough to keep thinking about. As I get more involved with the concept, I end up adding more of myself. Often, I base the concept on things I have heard or experienced recently that I haven't had time to process, and create scenes and character interactions based on them. At this point, I start drawing these concepts and characters- from sketches to fully colored comics- bringing them to life. During and after the creation process, I reflect on the story and draw connections with themes and characters to my own life and experiences.
I want to be understood, but I have a hard time doing so on my own, often finding more companionship through stories and fictional characters than other humans. But my desire to be acknowledged and truly understood by someone remains strong. Through these stories and pieces, I hope to share parts of myself with the viewer in a roundabout way, where patterns or details in character traits or experiences could lead viewers to understand who I am as a person.
Everything Sweet is a good example of this, the corkboard being entirely written information about the characters, which, if a viewer were to take the time, they could infer many of my own traits and beliefs just by reading. The comic shows those traits in action; by the nature of how I make my comics, details about my interests, food preferences, and design influences all permeate. I hope someone can notice, sit with, and feel a similar sense of understanding and companionship because of them.
