Artist Statement

I have not moved a lot during my life, however, the places I have lived had a huge influence on me. These places have taught me many things and have motivated me to produce artwork. Within personal space, I can imagine whatever I want and it allows me to have a broad perspective. Not only I have changed those places physically, but also the places have altered me tremendously. I wanted to share the thoughts and experiences related to personal space with other people. Therefore, through my artwork, I would like communicate with the viewers and I want them to reconsider their personal spaces when looking at my work.

For me, art is the bridge between imagination and expression. Creating art works solidifies my ideas and thoughts through visual elements. I express myself and build identity through this progress. As I have grown up, my interest in space has increased greatly, so I decided to work on a body of art with this theme.

The influence of place is remarkable, but I did not realize this before I came to the United States. Coming to the United States from Korea was a huge step and great change of my life. Everything was new to me: culture, language, people and food. I needed to study from the beginning. I had hard time to adjust new environment. I felt homesick and I realized the importance of home. Therefore, I began to create artworks which remind me of my home in Korea.

Personal space is crucial for people. It provides place to feel safe and also helps to build someone’s individuality. Not only us change those places physically, but also the places alter us. I have created artworks to share the thoughts and experiences related to personal space. I would like the audiences to reconsider their homes of personal spaces when looking at my work.
